Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation in '02' | Review

Morning all! I haven't written up a beauty review in months, literally. Being honest, I haven't felt entirely enthusiastic about beauty lately - I've stuck to using the products I love and that I've already reviewed on here. I rarely buy makeup anymore, apart from concealers and foundations here and there; I decided to treat myself to the famous 'Skin Base' foundation from Illamasqua a few weeks back when I was walking around Carnaby Street. I've heard endless amount of praises about this product and was delighted when I was matched almost instantly to a shade in the shop.
My first impressions were good; the match to my Casper-like skin was flawless with the shade '02' (yellow with pink undertones). It is probably one of the only foundations that has ever genuinely matched me so well (along with MUFE's Velvet Mat+ in 'Alabaster'). I thought the bottle was gorgeous, almost like a genie lamp. £27 was an okay price for 30ml of product; I'm used to paying around €30 for them regularly, as no extremely pale shades are sold in Boots etc (I've tried them ALL, before you leave me recommendations haha).
I was dying to try it out properly and I wore it the next day. I was immensely disappointed as soon as I started applying it! It latched on to any dry areas of my face, it automatically separated and looked scaly all around my T-Zone, it dragged when I tried to blend it in and it looked absolutely awful on me. No sheen, no skin showing through - I looked like a corpse. It had nothing to do with the shade mind - I always look ghost-like - it was the actual texture of the foundation that made me look 2D. I wore it out that day regardless, to see if it would improve as the day went on. It didn't. It continued to separate, my T-Zone was practically makeup-less after a few hours and I felt that any bit of moisture was sucked out of my skin. (You can see in my photographed swatch that the blended swatch on the righthand side is already looking cakey after seconds of application - on my hand!)
I decided to test out the foundation in different elements, to give it a good go for a review; I wore it in work (air-conditioning, can get hot, can't reapply for 5 hours until I'm off), outside (rain, cold, heat) and general indoors. It had the same effect each time. I have combination-oily skin, so the fact it made my skin dry was so bizarre to me - it's usually the opposite with foundation! The Pixiwoo sisters are huge fans and they have really dry skin, so maybe it only works for that skin type (although that still doesn't make sense in my head).
The only good thing about this foundation is the match to my skintone. I fell out of love with the bottle after a few uses, as it becomes hard to squeeze and get foundation out of it. I'd give 'Skin Base' merely a 2/10 for the match and the service I received in the shop. I definitely wouldn't recommend this if you're of a similar skin type to me; if you want to give it a go, PLEASE try a sample out first. I'm raging I spent £27 on something I'll probably never use. (Expect this to be sold in a blog sale soon, I know a heap of fans of 'Skin Base' are out there!)

Have you used this foundation? What did you think?

  1. Auch how disappointing! I love trying out new foundations, there's nothing worse though when you hear good things about one, then fork out the money for it only to find it doesn't work for you at all!! x

  2. Awe. Kinda dissapointed to read it looks so good on people :( but I get the same effect with studio fix foundation. Just cant get it to work for me.perfect matching Foundation is a never ending battle for me!

  3. I love this foundation, it's by far my favourite! I'm paler than you and I wear it mixed with their white shade, 01 so it's a perfect match. I'd say it's best suited to normal to oily skin since it does cling to dry patches. If it makes a difference I also find it's better applied stippled on and not rubbed around with a typical foundation brush. But it's definitely not cakey on me and makes my skin look naturally flawless. Shame you didn't get on with it!

I'd still recommend people try it, but definitely get a sample first.

    1. I think it'd be pretty impossible to be paler than me, haha! We're probably the same tone. The girl at the counter recommended I mixed it with 01 to tone down the yellow tones, but I didn't want to pay for two! Glad I didn't now.

    2. I don't know, maybe! But 02 is considerably noticible on me unless I add white! You should give it another go though, as someone else mentioned you should use as little as possible for your whole face (and conceal where necessary.) I don't even use double what you have on your hand in the swatch for my whole face. And either try stipple it on or buff it on. I find that works best! It's a really natural looking foundation when you get the hang of it, but it looks awful when caked on too heavy. It's very different from, say, MAC foundations that leave the completely airbrushed and sometimes very heavy look, this will make your skin look naturally good and will still look like skin. Hopefully you get on better with it next time! Such a shame to waste all that money!

  4. Such a shame that you didn't like it! I have dry to normal skin and it worked beautifully for me, as long as I had moisturised before application and applied it with my fingers, then adding more where needed with a buffing brush - maybe wait till spring/summer and your skin will change a little bit and you will hopefully enjoy it more!

    1. Nah sure my skin stays the same throughout the year - I applied it with my fingers, brushes and sponges and it just didn't work.

  5. I use it but I had the same problem with it sitting in dry patches. Now I mix it with a dollop of my moisturiser so it works as a sort of tinted moisturiser. I don't think I'll repurchase it when it's empty though - I think I'll buy NARS Sheer Glow in Siberia next time.

  6. Hm, that's a shame! I have combination-oily skin as well and I've been using it for ages and I haven't had the dry problem.I always moisturise before applying though. I do agree that it wears off fairly easily. It takes a few hours for me but it rubs off as soon as something brushes against my face. I think people should still try it but yeah, the sample first is a good idea!

  7. You're using it wrong, the tiniest amount is needed, use a buffing brush to work it into the skin.. it works well with illamasqua primers and their hyrdaveil, I have used it on myself (combo skin) and on clients with dry and oily skin, it sits perfectly.. Not suited to really dry or really oily..

    1. I wouldn't say there's a right/ wrong way to use foundations; especially if no particular instructions are given with the product for the everyday customer. For a foundation of such a price, you should be able to use it whichever way you like - without having to purchase more products for it to function.

    2. If you look on YouTube anyone who uses it uses the tinest amount.. Hydra veil was created because it wasn't sitting well on the skin with some customers. You should give it a go again with hydraveil and a pea sezed amount.

  8. I've been looking into getting this since I'm a pale Irish gal like yourself and have only heard the positives so it's interesting to read another perspective. I might still try a sample and see how it works out for my skin type (combination but dry in winter)

  9. Heya. Have also reviewed it here (http://blog.makeupfordolls.com/2012/09/illamasqua-skin-base-foundation.html) - as mentioned by Laura above it works unbelievably well with the Illamasqua Hydraveil (http://blog.makeupfordolls.com/2013/05/illamasqua-hydra-veil-verdict.html), which was formulated specifically to partner with Skinbase (the cynical amongst us think perhaps they might have just fixed the foundation, hmmmm). Recommend trying it out with that if you can!

  11. Hi Leanne, I have extremely pale skin like you and find it hard to get a foundation that matches me as most of the time even the palest shade will be too dark. Have you tried Face Atelier Ultra Foundation in Zero Minus? Its a lifesaver for me, I just add a few drops to whatever foundation I want to use and it lightens it up to match my skin perfectly. Another great foundation is Nars Sheer Glow in Siberia! :) xx

  12. Hey, I have extremely pale skin too. The only foundation that has ever matched my skin in any ways close is Naked Skin by Urban Decay in 0.5. It's light, natural looking and doesn't cake :) x

  13. It works really well when used with hydraveil as foundation often clings to dry patches on my skin too but it had a really flawless, even effect when I used both! But it's annoying to have to buy both! :)

  14. Thank you for this post! As a fellow Irish ghost I know just how feckin' hard it is to find a foundation that is pale but also good quality! At least I know that this one shouldn't be tried. And so the hunt goes on...

  23. Forex bank - take an analytical approach to trading. it does not begin at the fundamental and technical analysis of price trends, or the formulation of trading strategies. It begins at the first step taken into the career, with the first dollar placed in an open position, and the first mistakes in calculation and trading methods. The successful trader will keep a diary, a journal of his trading activity where he carefully scrutinizes his mistakes and successes to find out what works and what does not. This is one of the most importance forex trading tips that you will get from a good mentor.
